Never Heard of Thermal Paste
When I first heard the term thermal paste, I thought of heavy machinery needing something to lubricate its heat producing parts. It was not until I started building computer that I learned it was the compound put in between the CPU and the heat sink to help heat transfer.
Technically, the paste or grease helps two surfaces with imperfections contact each other to transfer thermal energy. Application onto the CPU fills the tiny holes and increases the surface contact between the heat sink. Without the paste, not enough energy would transfer and would cause the CPU to overheat.
When building a computer, thermal paste is that last thing I think about, though, it is one of the most important. It is highly recommended that you NEVER turn your computer on without a proper heat sink and thermal paste. The risk of overheating is too great.
My brand of choice is Arctic Silver. Beware, these products sell for a few dollars a GRAM, though, it is well worth the investment and only a small amount is used.
